Bands incorrectly categorised due to appearance or location…

I constantly see Marilyn Manson and My Chemical Romance being called ‘Gothic’ due to the fact that their attire is often dark. Neither of those bands play Gothic Rock or Gothic Metal.

While I’m guilty of calling them Grunge in the past, I would argue that Mother Love Bone and Screaming Trees were hardly Grunge at all and were mainly given that label due to being from Seattle and being around when Grunge was emerging.

So those are my examples. Can you think of any bands that have been wrongly categorised due to their appearance or location?
The Drunken Fool ; I’m sure no one is losing sleep over it – I just want to discuss it.
I also think Guns N’ Roses are wrongly called ‘Hair Metal’ because they looked the part in their early years. I’ve heard many arguments on both sides of that issue.

Miss B. tch ; I disagree.
Borne Ov Brutality ; ‘both’? I mentioned 4.
Danny & Lisa [or Christine W. as you were a few moments ago] ; I will weep for you too. . . you’re obviously an imbecile.

I’m not sure that you classify in terms of gothic rock, so easy, but I will not lose sleep. You can always change the ID3 tags of your music collection!

All groups l ‘you call “emo” today, because they scream. You are not Rites of Spring or Fugazi

  5. Dick Tater the Master Debator says:

There were a few bands in the 80s categorized as “Glam rock”, when they just looked the part while rockin’. Like – Motley Crue.

I agree with Deke. Man, Tesla and Queensryche were great bands. Don’t forget about the Cult.

  6. MISS B.ITCH says:

Marilyn Manson is a gothique. My Chemical Romance are just a rock / grunge bands pop.Aucune this, I want to know why TNS D is sometimes classified as a rock and JayZee why he believes something just because they have a few Cases with Linkin Park?

A lot of southern rock bands are now being labeled “country” by a lot of people (most of whom couldn’t tell Hank Williams from Vanessa Williams). Most notoriously is Lynyrd Skynyrd — it bugs me to no end to see their CDs in the “country” category in a record store. I’m sure Ronnie Van Zant is rolling over in his grave.

I cannot follow all category and Sub category. I know people want different to be, but I do not believe, it should still many further go as those. Even do not understand the music industry. In some places you say yourselves, volume are this type then look for you somewehre otherwise, and it is something else as classified. arrggghhh. ….

Good question, my distinguishing of genres is always a bit blurry, but I shall try!

I think when many people think Jimi Hendrix, they think psychedelia, but he’s not psychedelic. Yes, he was a bit part of the 60’s, the time psychedelia was booming, and yes he wore flowery headbands and shirts, but, he wasn’t a psychedelic artist. :)

  11. Pirate Girls Kick Butt! says:

Led Zeppelin as a metal band. That has never really seemed right to me. They are more like straight up rock and roll or stoner rock.
Any “metal” band that has more than one ballad on an album just doesn’t seem metal to me. Maybe there should be a new gere; ballad metal.

  12. Beatle fanatic says:

A lot of people categorize The Beatles as mainly a “Pop” band but in the 60’s they were definitely a “Rock” band.

Edit: Floydian Trooper – I agree too many genres are too confusing.
Edit: Ladytron is right-on about Jimi!
Edit: I also agree with Pirate Girls on Led Zeppelin.

  13. Vicky* says:

I agree about the gothic label, it gets slapped onto damn near anything nowadays.

Also Within Temptation is always referred to as symphonic metal. I’m fine with symph rock, but they haven’t really been metal since MAYBE Mother Earth, and their first album was completely different – more along the lines of gothic metal, actually.

And there’s been so much “They’re metal! nuh uh they’re rock!” hype around Evanescence, that I have no idea what they are.

Pretty much anything I listen to now is labelled emo by the ignorant people here. Nightwish is emo, apparently. Yikes!

  14. ♫MetalMark (Anti-Jonas)♫ says:

Slipknot/Korn/Linkin Park/Whatever the fake metal band of the week is currentely is not metal
That’s all I can think of.

  15. Blue says:

Someone called nirvana metal the other day, if thats a common label i def. disagree.

Calling bands like fall out boy and good charlotte punk is an insult to real punk bands

Calling the jonas bro’s, avril lavigne, etc rock

calling people from american idol anything

bands like POD, Disturbed, etc being classified as metal. Ugh.

And then there’s people who just hear band names and get turned off, i hear it alot w/ the pixies. Apparently everyone thinks their a chick pop band. Sad.

Edit: i agree w/ isawmart too. Some stores even but CSN&Y in country. Idiots.

  19. Silver * Rose ~ Wolf says:

I know of someone on here who insists the Prog Rock genius Mike Oldfield classes as ‘Space Rock’, merely because that’s what she thinks of when she listens to his work. Yet he has never written *any* songs that would qualify him for that genre. . .

And, for a reason I can’t understand, someone else on here keeps trying to tell people that Fleetwood Mac are ‘Folk-Rock’!

  20. hopeless romantic/idealist says:

For me, many groups taient à © rà © elsgrunge more noise. For example, I think that Nirvana, Mudhoney, Green River, Sonic Youth, the noise and grunge, except for some bands to amphetamine &reptil; amp; less on quality-label Sub Pop Aktenestrus except for some examples. Mother Love Bone, Pearl Jam, Marilyn Manson, Green Day, Offspring, Blink 182 and others that I would put in the cata goriemà © ª me, or d ‘à © tiquette is to provide the wannabecatà © gory. Don’t think that it really matters that much. . . if you like a band and their music. . . thats what matters. . . not what genre . . . they are put into!
