Do you think that Learning, Knowledge and Understanding has been made Redundant by google?

If you read a lot of the posts in different forums, or just browse opinions on the web, there are a lot of people (usually American) who, for some reason, are amazingly stupid.

They appear to like nothing more than to wave their stupidity in other’s faces and shout about how idiotic they are from the highest rooftop.
Because if you live in a penthouse you are obviously better than your fellow (wo)man, through who’s lower story flat your sewerage does flow.

It’s like they believe that whatever they say is right, just because they have access to the internet, thinking that because it is written it is 100% true.
Therefore they affect this strange attitude where the words they speak gain a kind of religious weight for them and they cannot be reasoned with and do not accept any kind of alternate suggestion whatsoever.

Occam’s Razor is often totally disregarded and the most complex and ridiculous solution to anything (the more stupid, the better) is oft seen as the correct one.

It’s a very fundamentalist thing. Kind of like the backwards and cretinous people who believe that Intelligent Design is absolute and Evolution is a myth.

I don’t get why people cannot just say (if they have to bring God into it) that Evolution is part of God’s Intelligent Design.
IMO that would be the whole question laid to rest.

It’s infuriating that debates such as this continue. The people debating it tend to wear clothes from the early 90′s, have mullets or perms, possibly a bum-fluff moustache, and do not have contact with the civilised world outside of arsehole-of-nowhere, USA.

Instead of actually comprehending something and learning it, a lot of people (at least, it seems to me) just use google and then will post their findings, simply regurgitating what is already said – often not even bothering to correct mistakes in the original text (which shows how quality the original really is), in lieu of actually researching something and gaining some kind of understanding.

Yahoo Answers is a good example of this. Many answers are just people copying and pasting what they’ve searched. Perhaps changing the text if they really want you to think that what they’ve said is the fruit of their own mental labours.
Those are the worst – people who try to pass themselves off as something amazingly special, when really it is the original idea that they have ripped off and attempt to say is their own that is amazingly special.

I find it entirely repugnant that people today will wear beliefs and ideas like a badge or the latest Vamp or Emo or Goth or Punk or Gay or Athletic or Whatever fashion.

Is there no integrity anymore?
Do people just ascribe to lifestyles for what it represents to others, rather than for what it means to them?

Is the world becoming too plastic and faux-fur? Losing the genuine and hard-earned things that make humans stand apart from monkeys who believe that the world was created by a book, written in faeces by a slightly congenitally challenged gibbon named Susan?

In some ways, using Yahoo Answers is pretty pointless for the things that are like this (not brain damaged gibbons but answers to superfluous questions that have been many times answered before) – why bother asking when you can just type the same question into google – or even Yahoo Answers itself! – and get the answer?

But then, you’d miss out on all the jerk-off stuff that makes people’s empty lives more managable and lowers the suicide rate because people are able to put off the big questions like “what is the point in all this? I may as well just die now and get it all over with” by chasing material gain and filling the void with things they can lord over others.
(eg Answers to Questions)

Being better than everyone else, either by yourself or in your clique, is paramount.

Oh yes – You cannot google this question because it requires your personal, individual opinion. Not that of others which you have simply stuck together with the super-glue of your feeble minds.

If you do what many people do in answering my questions and say what you think I want to hear, then please save us all the effort as that sux.

I am probably the only (and best) person I know who literally knows everything.
I do not need to use google *ever* because I am so brainy.

See? I have 90% best answer.

That means I am cool. And better than most of you, who only have 5% best answer. (or less. . . If you have more than me, you must have cheated. )

Now that you think I am a nob, you will be able to answer this question properly if you are able to put aside your prejudice.
If you cannot, then you may end up saying something that makes you seem like a homophobic redneck.

I have phrased this question so that it is a good representation of the self-assured and pathetically narcissitic and arrogant things that a lot of people will slap post over the internets.

If you agree with what I have said above, then it may be worthwhile employing as
If you agree with what I have said above, then it may be worthwhile employing me as your personal “Real Life Interpreter” and “Delusion Dispelling Amazing Person”.

If you don’t, then you are obviously one of the people that I am referring to and you should employ me as your “Slap in the face when you’re hysterical” and “WTF are you talking about? You simply have no idea you bloody sheep” person.

Either way if you take this seriously you need a sense of humour.

But I would still like to hear your opinions on whether you believe that people are not as clever or learned as they were 20 years ago.

I am sorry I had to write so much, but I have found that the longer the question – the less likely it is that simpletons and people with no opinion of their own are to answer it.

There is simply so much text to read and there is no movie out yet.
They cannot be bothered because that way, they get Ritalin.
And drugs are kewl.
If you have read this far, you are either in need of help or you are actually quite intelligent and have good humour and are a lovely person who is not stoopid. Lolz, Kewl and Brillo!

So, for those of you who have an IQ of over 90 (mine was tested using the Cattell IIB and scored as 150ish), here is the real question.

In short it is:

Do you think that people substitute actual learning and understanding for the easy option, which is to cut and paste from google searches?

(ie, cheat at being intelligent and fake being slightly more than stupid, coasting through life like a middle-management consultant in how to manage things that don’t require managing, from Reading who lives in Scunthorpe with their parents who both had the same surname before they were married and are actually brother and sister. )
Or tout their uninformed opinons on the internet, when they would never even consider saying anything like it in Real Life to their peers?

(for fear of being ridiculed and having to actually face the person to whom they are speaking)

And “Are people less clever than they were 20 years ago?”

(considering that most scholastic exams and courses now are very much easier than before. )

Danke Schon!

i do think so. . because we Americans arent forced to learn much. All we have to do to find out the answer to our question is hop on the computer, type it in, and there it is. . it takes no brains to figure out. . i dont even think half of americans know how to use a dictionary. . . because you dont have to anymore. You just go on to dictionary. com and it does all the work for you.

To answer your title question no – it makes knowledge more accessible to everyone.

But as for your opinions of a certain type of people then – amen, there truly are alot of people on here who have a disturbing tendency for a complete disregard for fact in favour of ‘an impression that they got from tv’ or something as equally illogical.

However we should pity these people who are unable to critically think about the motivation and potential bias behind the information they consume.

I would agree to the extent that it has made it easier for the stupid to be heard and for the ignorant to be misled.
I have seen people give the best answer to answers which supported the asker’s bias and did not really support themselves. People need to be taught or at least teach themselves issues like verifying information rhetoric and logic. As there is a lack of all 3 on line.
