6:30PM End-to-End Opening Party to celebrate the reopening of the entire 601-foot length of the largest Gothic Cathedral in the world. This is the 3rd video of the restored Great Aeolian Skinner Organ, Op. 150B, featuring the world renowned State Trumpet stop. The Cathedral’s Director of Cathedral Music and Organist Bruce Neswick performs a short organ demonstration for the invited guests. I also took a few pictures of the organ and of the beautifully lit nave. Enjoy!

how many readers here have heard the re-installed
St. John the Divine organ? I believe that two organ
recital series are taking place; one on Tuesday
evenings and the other on Sundays.
The St. John’s the Divine body will be heard dansconsidérants again, from this October. This seraun great way to get the body reheard.
I understand that a new recital series at St. John
the Divine will begin this October. It will be continued
next year and go on into future years. This will
be a good way to getting the organ heard again
This is a beautiful place. I only wish the Cathedral would be finished. It’s nice that it’s all open and the organ has been fixed, but it’s ashame to see it not yet completed. Bruce’s playing, however, makes up for it. God stops and listens when Bruce plays! We love and miss you here in Atlanta at the Cathedral of St. Philip.
Yes, do get to the cathedral as soon as you can.
It’s wonderful that it’s open again; try to take the
vertical tour up the inside stairs. I took it and it was
an unforgettable experience.
I played for one hour on the body re-installé.Un thrill and privilege it was. I guess queun number of organists want time on respective basic gauge. Simply contact Tim Brumfield ouBruce Neswick and agree with one of them. Richard
Bruce yo! We miss you in Atlanta @ ft Philip! Your musical talents, the prowess of organs and praise to Gd @ Atlanta at our Cathedral, will never be forgotten!. . . we love you in ATL! Many Thanks Bruce!
Yeah, and he was the jolly one also. I really should make the trip from Jersey to see and hear what has been done there. I usually make it over to Riverside when there. The last service I heard from Riverside they had a bad sounding Allan that was being used while some work was getting done. It sounded so bad I lost interest in Riverside. Hopefully things are better now. I don’t even know if they finally found a new senior minister.
Yes, I was at Carlo’s recital about 10 years ago – one of the best organ recitals I have ever attended! It is too bad he doesn’t allow anyone other than Decca to record his recitals. . .
I saw Carlo Curly there, maybe about 10 years ago. The building is huge and very interesting. If anyone can get to NYC this place is a must. Thanks for the post.
It’s so moving and wonderful to see and hear the Great Organ again! It was such an inspiration to so many of
us after the GDH rebuild in 1954. Those of us who
didn’t live within easy commute of NYC had to
rely on recordings. I’m sure Bruce Neswick will
be bombarded (pun intended) with requests to play the organ now!
The new position also allows the console to see the celebrant, without the use of this store huge mirrors on the north choir.
Bleedin good, ole chaps! I intend to get my ass up to NY some day soon and hear and or play this thing!
Alright cool. . . . . . . . . . . . .
GDH appended Op. 150 with 150A in 1953, but with the addition of the Pedal 8′ Spitzflöte in 1963 Aeolian Skinner changed 150A to 150B. . . Some people refer to the ‘current’ organ as 150AB – so it depends!!
Please forgive me all, if I’m not mistaken, it’s Opus 150A. When E. M. Skinner completed it, it was his 150th Opus. After the enlargement/rebuild by G. Donald Harrison, he designated it 150A. I could be wrong though. . . . . . .
Thank you so much for these postings which are excellent. I couldn’t make it up to NYC for the re-dedication services. I grew up near the Cathedral and have played this instrument many, many times with the kind permission of Pizzarro, Halley, & Papadakos. My brother sang in the choir & went to the cathedral school under Dr. Wyton. I’ve recorded both video (I’ll post it here one day) audio, played a graduation, and an evensong improvisation in 1993. The organ hasn’t sounded better! Thanks!!!
Thank you for this video clearly shows the new position of the console. I am sure that this new position, it is much easier for the organist to hear the instrument. Can not wait to go to New York to see the cathedral. In the meantime, I suggest you make other videos around the building, especially the chapels. Thank you!
Thank you, thank you, thank you, lizdave. Your previous videos were incredible. I was sitting a few rows ahead of you if it is particularly valuable for me.
Fabulous. I remember the first time I heard 150B in 1963. The biggest reed in my hometown was either an oboe or vox humana–that State Trumpet was astounding to my then 9year old ears. It would be at 55 years as well. It is so good to have 150B back.
I never tire of 150B! The two photos of the event at the end are excellent. You shared with us some very, very precious pictures, livzdave.
