The definition of a protagonist is the character whose actions move the plot along. So he needs to be someone whose actions affect what the other characters do or what events take place. The main character in the book I am working on is very temper mental, and when she has a fit of anger someone usually gets hurt and she winds up creating a conflict that interferes with her goal to kill the man that killed her mother. For your character, you may want to consider making him someone with a lot of power (political or social) whether it be in a small setting or large setting. You also need to ask the question, are you writing him in the sense of modern goth or such as someone from The Dark Ages aka The Gothic Era.
